The Band
Hardtack and Harmony, from Toronto Canada, makes music to entertain and educate
audiences on aspects of the American Civil War, a conflict in which over 50,000 Canadians
participated. The band members, themselves Civil War re-enactors, got their start together
playing around the campfire for the entertainment of their friends. Since then, they have gone
on to record three C.D.’s and have performed in various venues across Canada and the U.S.
Their music has also been featured on CBC FM radio and City TV’s Breakfast Television. The
band has recently expanded their repertoire to cover non-military 19th century venues as
well. Whether playing popular songs from the 1860s, or their own original material, Hardtack
& Harmony’s distinctive style evokes the spirit of this fascinating period in North American
history.
Sample Performance Venues
Civil War Re-enactments – such as Gettysburg, Antietam, Bentonville etc. across Ontario and
the Eastern States including: New York, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia,
North Carolina.

Heritage Festival (Maryland), Old Fort Henry (Kingston), Fort Malden (Amherstburg),

War veteran who was one of only eight black doctors to serve with the Federal Army). They
also performed at the Toronto premier showing of the movies “Gettysburg” and “Gods and
Generals”.
Weddings and Period Dances - The band has performed at a number of private functions and
is able to provide the services of a dance caller who can instruct and lead audiences through
dance steps of the 19th century.
The Members
All band members are Civil War re-enactors with the 10th Louisiana Company 'C', a unit
under the umbrella of the American Civil War Historical Re-enactment Society (ACWHRS)
based in Toronto, Canada. With more than 50,000 Canadians taking part in the American Civil
War, there is a sense of pride and kinship with our American comrades who have an interest
in this period in history.
